RUSSIAN R-014 (DATCIK)

This is a mobile Russian communications system.

The Model R-014 device, in the caramel coloured case, was is not a cipher machine but a storage element which held encrypted messages prior to transmission.

A close-up view of the R-014 (P-014 in Cyrillic). Jim Meyer DJ2EI, provides a brief overview. "It is a pure storage device for messages which have already been encrypted to numbers from 0-9. The numbers were then entered into the memory by the numerical keyboard.

Once entered, the contents of the memory could be transmitted at a speed of 75 or 150 baud but not using Baudot but a special code. This unit wass mostly used in
conjunction with the R-130 HF SSB transceiver which is
also part of the rack shown in the picture. The R-130 has a special socket for connection of the R-014 and the mode switch has a position "F1" since the R-104 can not be used to receive coded messages. The companion modem for the R-014 is the R-010 and was used mainly with a tape-recorder at the output instead of a teleprinter".
